Advanced Independent Art

With teacher's permission this course is designed to allow advanced art students to pursue higher levels of art in chosen media areas. Students enrolling in this course should have demonstrated a high ability level and a strong interest in previous art courses taken. Emphasis will be placed on creating work for display.

Ceramics

In this project-oriented course, students will work with the basic methods and techniques of hand built and wheel-thrown ceramics and develop techniques and skills making original ceramic pieces.

Freehand Drawing

Students will develop drawing techniques and skills by drawing from still life. Emphasis will be placed on developing the ability to make detailed observations and use drawing techniques to record these observations. A weekly sketchbook is required.

Painting

This is a project-oriented class where students will work with basic methods and techniques of painting by creating finished works.

Photography

This is project-oriented course where students will develop photographic techniques and skills using their own 35 mm camera to take pictures and the school's darkroom to develop, to print, and to enlarge photographs.

Advanced Photography And Stained Glass

Grade Level: 10-12

This course allows a high concentration and areas of photography and stained glass. Students enrolling in this course should have already completed and have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in the areas of photography and stained glass. Emphasis will be placed on creating show quality work.

Sculpture

In this project oriented class students will work with the foil methods of stained glass and will develop techniques by creating finished stained glass panels. Students will be charged for glass used in project. Average Cost is $20

Accounting 1

The student will learn to apply double-entry accounting to complete the accounting cycle by analyzing, journalizing, posting, proving accuracy, preparing financial reports, and closing books for a service business, a retail business, and a corporation.

Advanced Accounting

Grade Level: 11-12

This course is the second year of accounting, students will study cash and accrual basis accounting, partnership accounting, and corporate accounting. There will be considerable emphasis on learning to use a computerized accounting program to keep accounting records.

Business Law

This course will take a detailed look at personal, social, consumer, and business law problems. Emphasis is placed on preventive law. Areas covered include contracts, sales, bailments, juvenile and adult rights and responsibilities, the courts, crimes, adn torts. The class will hold a mock trial.

Business Technology

Prerequisite: 1 credit in computer technology with grade of C or better.
Grade Level: 12

Students will experience various tasks required of an entry-level office support person, including the setting of priorities, working under pressure of deadlines and accepting constructive criticism of completed work. Interview, calculator, telephone, human resource, and manual records management, computerized records management skills will be covered. Students will use the computer and word processor, database, and spreadsheet programs to gain knowledge in how the computer is used in today's electronic office. They will also do a unit on the electronic calculator.

College Computer Applications Spring Semester

This course provides students an opportunity to expand upon previous knowledge or computer systems and various software applications learned in Computer Technology. Topics to be covered include: Microsoft Windows operating system environment and advanced features of Microsoft Office Suite ( word processing, presentation, spreadsheet: data base, Internet, and web page authoring) Textbook work will be mixed with lots of hands-on experience and written and performance-based tests.

Computer Technology

This course provides students with a opportunity to gain knowledge of computer technology and various software applications that are available on the market today. Students will review proper keyboarding skills, then work with word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, internet and e-mail applications, Students will learn how to properly format memos, letters, reports and resumes; produce spreadsheets using a variety of equations; develop data bases; create and deliver computer slide show presentations; and learn ways to use the internet and e-mail for productive, educational uses. Students taking this course for the entire year will satisfy the computer literacy requirement for graduation.

Junior In House Training

The purpose of in house training is to simulate a business environment so that students experience the skills, so that students experience the skills, knowledge and attitudes that accompany working in a business setting. The student will do live production work for the school district, as well as community businesses, club and organizations. The student is treated as an employee rather than a student; the teacher acts as the employer. Evaluation is done through employee-employer evaluation documents.

Senior In House Training

This course will help students gain insights into the development of their own business future. Students will be developing a marketing plan, selecting a business location, planning the business design and layout, preparing personnel organization charts, and planning and obtaining financing. In addition, the students will write job requirements, plan a grand opening and prepare a promotional campaign for their stores//products. It will cover written and verbal communications unique to the business setting. Students will gain self-awareness and learn how to get along with others with emphasis ibn human relations skills necessary in the work force.

Word Processing//Data Base Applications

Prerequisites: Computer Technology with grade of C or better.
Grade Level: 11-12

This course will refine the skills learned in Computer Technology, with some emphasis on setting groundwork for development of entry-level office skills. A working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, Adobe PageMaker, desktop publishing software and graphics software, and hyperlink mark-up language [[web page design]] will be developed students will prepare business documents, as well as design letterheads, brochures,  newsletters, and advertisements. Basics of desktop and web publishing will be developed. Students will also create and maintain data bases, integrating the contents with other business documents.

Parenting

Balancing Work and Family

This is a practical course that enables an individual to establish and maintain the roles that lead into balancing work and the family. Nutrition and Wellness

This course will stress how decisions affect wellness in adopting a healthful eating and exercise pattern. German 1

The student will develop a basic knowledge of the German language by participationg in listing, speaking, writing, and reading activities. German culture and customs will also be studied.

The student will further his//her knowledge gained in German 1 to be able to comprehend, read, write, and converse in German. Customs and culture of German speaking people will be studied. Students in the course should have a C or better in German 1.

The students will further their knowledge of the German language and culture through reading, writing, and speaking activities with an emphasis on reading German literature and review of German grammar.

Spanish 1

Each student will develop a rudimentary knowledge of the Spanish language and will be able to demonstrate this knowledge by speaking, writing, and reading in Spanish. Study Skills, geography, culture, and customs will also be studied.

AP Spanish 4

This course is to further already acquired Spanish reading, writing, and conversation skills. There will be further emphasis on Spanish literature and culture. Spanish will be spoken in class. It is recommended that students have a B grade or better in Spanish. This is a college prep class and will give a free college credit if AP language test is passed.

Health Physical Education and Recreation Department

Individual Development

This class will stress activities that are intended to enhance individual physical development and performance such as weight lifting, polymeric and other conditioning activities. 

Lifelong Activities

Prerequisites: Freshman Physical Education//Health
Grade Level: 10-12

This class will stress individual lifelong activities such as aerobics and weight lifting . Recreational team games will also be included in this class. Intermediate instruction in this class will include graded in class assignments for all components of the class.

Freshmen PE//Health

Grade Level: 9

All freshmen are required to take physical education. A total of 40 hours of classroom health instruction will be combined with 140 hours of team and individual activities. The emphasis of the physical education component will be on lifelong physical fitness activity and conditioning. The health education component will include instruction in but not limited to, nutrition, drugs and alcohol, and sex education.

Industrial Arts Department

Mechanical Drawing

This class will introduce the student to the field of drafting and the language of industry. The student will complete several required drawings used by the industries of today. The student will develop many of the work habits that are required in industry, such as: neatness, speed, and accuracy.

Engineering Drawing

Grade Level: 10-12

Through drawings the student will study the principles of pulleys, gears, cams, and geometric construction. Areas of aerospace, boat, and marine, and manufacturing of furniture will be covered. In addition to board work, the student will cover introduction to AutoCAD.

Woodworking Tech

Grade Level: 9-12

This required introductory course develops good working habits through exploring construction by studying basic drafting, learning to safely use power equipment. After completing two required wood projects, the student is able to build a wood project of his//her choice. Students are responsible for the cost of materials used in construction.

Architectural Drawing

Prerequisites: Mechanical Drawing, Engineering Drawing
Grade Level: 11-12

Through drawing the student will study floor plans, elements of frame house construction and elevations. In addition, landscape map drawing and electronics will be covered. Along with board work, the student will be required to use the AutoCAD on several drawings.

Materials && Processes

Prerequisites: 1 credit in Woodworking Tech
Grade Level: 10-12

This course will cover metal working and small engines and their uses in technology. Areas that will be covered are sheet metals, welding with gas and arc, heat treatments and forge work. The student will complete several required projects with metal, review, woodworking and the tools used in woodworking, and finish a required woods project. the student may then build a woods project of his//her choice. Students are responsible for the cost of materials used in construction.

Advanced Industrial Arts

Prerequisites: 1 credit each in Woodworking Tech and Materials and Process
Grade Level: 11-12

All students who enter this independent study program must enter into a contract calling his//her field of choice. Students who enter woodworking must complete a required project before doing a project of his//her choice. Students who declare carpentry as his//her major area of study will be expected to help build a required construction project. Students are responsible for the cost of materials used in Construction.

Advanced Drafting

All students who enter the Advance Drafting Program must declare which field of study he//she wants to specialize in. Areas of welding, architectural plumbing and heating, and electronics are available for advance study. The AutoCAD system will be used exclusively on all drawing.

Language Arts Course Descriptions

Senior English

1 credit

Prerequisite: None

Grade Level: 12

This course is a combination of reviewing grammar, usage, and punctuation rules, building composition skills, and studying significant works of English literature. Students will use the steps in the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and evaluating to compose essays in a variety of forms, including a research paper according to MLA format.  They will demonstrate an understanding of the elements of literature through the study of novels, poetry, and a Shakespearean play.  Other areas of emphasis throughout the year will be ACT preparation, vocabulary enhancement, reading skills practice, and scholarship application.

College Composition I

Prerequisite: Minimum English ACT score of 23

Grade Level: 12

English Composition I is offered for dual credit to seniors who score a minimum of 23 on the English section of the ACT.  Students who complete the course receive credit for the Senior English requirement at Beloit High School as well as three hours of college credit from Cloud County Community College.  This course provides instruction in writing with emphasis on grammatical correctness, acceptable usage, and effective organization and expression of ideas.  Assigned reading, a minimum of eight expository essays, and a research paper are required.  Peer editing and individual conferencing are integral parts of the course.  Types of writing include journal entries, free writings, and essays of these modes: narration, description, exemplification, process, cause/effect, definition, classification, and comparison/contrast.

College Composition II

Prerequisite: College Composition I

Grade Level: 12  

English Composition II is offered for dual credit to seniors who have successfully completed English Composition I.  This course emphasizes college-level writing, reading, and analysis skills.  Types of writing will include editorial, satire, summary/critique, explication of a poem, analysis of theme, plot, character, tone and irony, and reference papers.  Peer editing and individual conferencing are integral parts of this course.

Journalism

Prerequisite: At least a C average in previous English course

Grade Level: 10-12

This course establishes a basic understanding of the writing and production of a newspaper.  It covers news, feature, editorial, sports, and caption writing, interviewing; photography; media ethics and law; and editing.  Selected articles will be published in The Trojan Times, the monthly student newspaper produced in conjunction with the In-House Desktop Publishing Class.  Students are expected to have strong writing skills, initiative, and the ability to work cooperatively with others and manage time effectively.

Real World Communication

This class begins with an emphasis on communicating clearly and incorporating technical writing skills, such as writing concise descriptions and directions, and exploring how technology affects the way we communicate.  This is followed by a unit on media literacy, which includes examining marketing and advertising techniques, studying print and broadcast media, recognizing bias in the media, interpreting editorial cartoons, understanding the effects of violence in the media, and exploring urban legends and hoaxes circulated through electronic communication.  

Creative Writing

This class provides students with the opportunity to explore a variety of writing forms.  Writing may include poetry, fables, literature for children, short stories, and plays.

Forensics

Grade Level: 9-12

Students will learn about and participate in various forensics activities, including original oration, extemporaneous speaking, duet acting, oral interpretation of prose and poetry, informative speaking, solo acting, improvised duet acting. Students will be required to participate in extracurricular forensics activities on Saturdays and some weekdays.

Developmental Reading

Grade Level: 7-12

A reading program for developing reading skills in students with low comprehension abilities. Focus is given to state reading standards as well as basic comprehension skills and strategies ( i.e.. main idea, cause/effect, fig. language, etc.) as well as vocabulary building. Divided into three sections for low medium and high functioning (as determined by the teacher/Counselor).  

Introduction to Theater

Grade Level: 9-12

This course will introduce the student to various facets of the theater including the history of theater from the Greek period to the Renaissance. Technical aspects such as building scenery, lighting, make-up, costume design, and publicity will be examined with the class participates in producing the fall play. Students will gain experience in acting as well as improvisational skills.

Freshman English

Students in Freshman English will study classic literature, paragraph and essay writing, the research process, and grammar and usage.

Senior English

This is a course geared toward basic understanding of the practice of journalism and writing techniques. Real World Communication

Grade Level: 11-12

Applied Communication covers skills needed to communicate well in daily life as well as in the workplace. This means applying reading, writing, listening, speaking, and problem solving to a variety of situations. Some activities include role playing, creating visual aids, writing technically based papers, participating in class discussions, and obtaining information through oral and written sources.

Sophomore English

Grade Level: 10

The first semester of sophomore English will be a speech unit devoted to the development of verbal communication skills through student participation activities. The second semester will be devoted to improving the student's grammar, composition, and vocabulary skills. It will also focus on a variety of literature.

Yearbook

Yearbook is a course geared toward basic understanding of yearbook technique/ Once the basic skills are acquired, the student begins working to complete the annual Trojan yearbook. Computer Application Skills and a B average in English are recommended.

Algebra 1-A

Grade Level: 9-12

This course is designed to help those students with algebra anxiety to succeed in Algebra 1. It will cover the same material as the first 1/2 to 3/4 of Algebra 1. It will allow for additional time to cover each area before going to the next.

Algebra 1-B
1 credit

Prerequisites: 1 credit in Algebra 1-A
Grade Level: 10-12

This course will start with a review of the Algebra 1A curriculum . Concepts will be taught at a slower rate to insure complete understanding of each concept before going on.

Algebra 1

Grade Level: 9-12

Algebra 1 should prepare the student to continue studies in mathematics and the sciences. Topics of study will include variables, first-degree equations, graphics, real numbers. polynomials, linear equations, fractions, inequalities, and quadratic equations.

Algebra 2

Prerequisites: 1 credit in Algebra 1 or Algebra 1-A and Algebra 1-B
Grade Level: 11-12

This course will review topics learned in Algebra 1 and then continue more advanced study by covering linear equations, quadratic equations, polynomials, and analytic geometry, and conic sections.

Analysis

Grade Level: 11-12

The student will study the limit of a sequence, find the limit of a sequence, find the limit of a function by using the difference quotient process and the formula, use derivative to graph functions and solve practical problems, and learn to use the definition of integreal to solve problems.

AP Calculus

This student will study and evaluate limits, and use differentiation and integration techniques on polynomial ad trigonometric functions. Applications involving maximum and minimums and areas bounded by curves, as well as derivative tests will also be utilized. Purpose is to pass test for college credit.

College Algebra

The course covers the standard topics of algebra, including linear and quadratic equations, graphing, functions, and functional notation, higher order polynomial equations, determinants, matrix algebra, sequence, and series.

Calculus

Grade Level: 11-12

The student will study and evaluate limits, and use differentiation and integregation techniques on polynomial and trigonometric functions. Applications involving maximum and minimums and areas bounded by curves, as well as derivative tests will also be utilized.

Geometry

Prerequisites: Algebra 1
Grade Level: 9-12

Geometry will emphasize the "discovery" method and indirect reasoning rather than the traditional method which uses direct reasoning. Instead of doing formal proofs, students will use math tools to "create" geometry and "discover," form conjectures, and text properties for themselves. Problem solving skills, logic problems, and visualization skills will be stressed.

Probability and Statistics

Prerequisites: 1 credit of Algebra 2
Grade Level: 11-12

This course is the study of odds, permutations, and combinations or "What are the chances of something occurring?" Topics involving the lottery, dice, card, etc. will be studied. Statistics involves sampling techniques, normal distributions curves, standard deviation, and variance as they apply to both selected groups and random samples.

Trigonometry

Prerequisites: Credit in Algebra 2 and Geometry preferred
Grade Level: 11-12

A study of triangles, angles, and their relationships, the course will cover the six basic functions of trigonometry and the real number system. The student will draw graphs, make predictions from graphs, solve identities in an understandable form, and apply trigonometric methods to solve real word problems.

Music Department

Women's Chorus

Prerequisites: Auditions; Instructor Permission
Grade Level: 9-12

Approximately 25 opening are available along with the possibility for auditions of new students coming into the district. The purpose of this class is to advance the singer's vocal technique and music reading skills, permit the singers to have opportunity to participate creatively and expressively in several concerts, introduce and expand the student's understanding of many styles of music literature from different periods and in different languages. All members are required to participate in school related performances and at the state large ensemble music festival. Some members will be selected to participate in various honor choirs. This class is recommended for students who truly enjoy singing, are willing to work hard, and may possible sing in choirs at the college level. Private voice levels with the instructor will available for those students interested in contest, special programs, or festivals.

Orchestra

The objective of this course is to provide a well-balanced orchestra as an actively program, an instrumental study for students according to their desire and ability, and encouragement for students to continue music participation into adult life.

Varsity Band

The purpose of this class is to develop high level of musicianship, character, and responsibility (in all who enroll). This group will consist of concert band, pep band, and traveling band, and marching band.

Music Theory

Explorations in music are designed for those students who are interested in developing their knowledge of music. The class will be tailored to meet the needs of each year's enrollment. Courses of study will include music history, music theory, and careers in music. Students will learn rudimental theory and basic part writing. The use of technology in music will be explored.

Show Choir

Up to 20 positions are available in this group (10 girls and 10 boys). Auditions will be held in the spring semester of the previous school year. Those students selected  to be in Show Choir will need to purchase an outfit costing between $100-!10. The purpose of the class is to advance the singer's vocal technique and music reading skills,, permit the singer's opportunities to participate creatively and expressively by singing and dancing in several concerts, and to introduce and expand the student's understanding of many styles of music literature from different periods and in different languages. They will also learn the same music as the Varsity Voices and are required to perform with them as a large ensemble in concerts and at contest. Students in Show Choir are expected to make arrangements in their schedules so they can participate in performances in the community, which are often in the evening. Some students in this group will be selected to participate in various honor choirs. Private vice lessons with the instructor will be available for those students interested in contests, special programs, or festivals.

Singing Sensations

Approximately 25 openings are available along with the possibility for auditions along with the possibility for auditions of new students coming into the district. The purpose of this class is to advance the singer's vocal technique and music reading skills, permit the singers to have opportunities to participate creatively and expressively in several concerts, introduce and expand the student's understanding of many styles of music literature from different periods and in different languages. All members are required to participate in school related performances and at the state large ensemble music festival. Some members will be selected to participate in various honor choirs. This class is recommended for students who truly enjoy singing, are willing to work hard, and may possible sing in choirs at the college level. Private voice lessons with the instructor will be available for those students interested in contest, special programs, or festivals.

Chemistry deals with the composition of matter and reactions among various forms of matter. Life and Job Survival 1

This course is designed for the freshman students who is interested in developing the life skills, social skills and occupational skills needed to survive as a productive member of society. Areas covered will include personal finance, personal needs, selecting transportation, developing self-image, social behaviors, communication skills, exploring careers, job search, and in-house training. This course is the first in a sequence of four in which the last year will be spent on the job.

Life and Survival 2

This course is designed for the sophomore student who has taken the first level. This course will include food management, learning to be a responsible citizen, personal and social skills dealing with problem solving, interpersonal skills, work habits, job communications skills, on-the-job skills, and in-house training. This class is designed to attract talented young people to the teaching profession. The program will provide students insight into the nature of teaching, the problems of school and the critical issues affecting the quality of education in America's schools. All students are required to observe and participate in classrooms at the elementary, junior high and high school levels. Special education, pre-school, remedial programs and vocational//technical programs will also be observed and studied.

Web Page Design

This course is designed for any high school student interested in designing and building web pages. Students will work with Front Page and Flash 5.0. The class is responsible for maintaining the school's web site. Students will be required to attend activities during non school hours to take pictures and gather information for the web page.
