  1.  VFW Voice of Democracy Scholarship
Worth $30,000
Deadline October 27   You will have to do a recorded script of between 3 and 5 minutes (4 ½ to 5 min speeches are almost always judged higher).  The theme of the script is "Service and Sacrifice by America ’s Veterans Benefit today’s Youth by…”.  A local scholarship committee will decide a local winner and then he/she will go on to district competition.  There will be 3 local winners with 1st getting $225, 2nd will get $175, 3rd $100.  Judging is based on Delivery = 20pts., Originality = 40PTS., CONTENT = 40PTS.  The essay has the best chance of success if it is written
as a positive message and if it is very close in length to 5 minutes.

 

2.  Masonic Lodge Scholarship---AMOUNT---4 awards of up to $4,000---ELIGIBILITY---Any junior or senior in a Kansas public high school is eligible.---DEADLINE---Essays must be turned in to Mr. Duntz on or before Oct. 29. ---GENERAL INFORMATION---This is a essay contest that must be at least 300 words and no more than 500 words.  The topic of the essay is: “Do positive role models exist in today’s society?  Explain your rationale” There is a local winner selected who will receive $200 and then go on to state competition while the local runner-up will receive $100. 

3 .  Coca Cola scholarship--Amount---50 awards worth $20,000 and 200 worth $10,000.--- Deadline---Must be completed on line on or before October 31.---Eligibility---Must  be a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, Permanent resident, Temporary Resident, Refugee, Asylee, Cuban-Haitian Entrant or Humanitarian Parolee who is a graduating senior with at least a 3.0 GPA.---Selection---will emphasize students who are well-rounded.  Applicants are judged on ability to lead, Academic Achievement, and hours of community service.  You must apply on line at www.coca-colascholars.org.  Click “Coca-cola four year award for seniors”.  It will ask you for your school CEEB code.  It is  (170260).  This scholarship requires a significant amount of time in collecting information and in answering questions. 

4.  Dane G. Hansen Scholarship--Worth up to $20,000.  You may be awarded up to $20,000 for college or $2,000 for vo-tech.-- Deadline Varies

 

               The competition for this scholarship is divided into two different groups. Students planning to attend Vo-tech  and those planning to attend college in Kansas .  There is no application form for those planning to attend college but they must give me their names by AUGUST 31.  Those planning to attend a Vo-tech must complete an application form and have it submitted to the Hansen Foundation no later than Oct. 3.  College bound applicants must have a minimum of a 3.50 grade point average, be participants in BHS extra-curricular and community activities, have displayed good citizenship, leadership and moral integrity, and be proficient in written and oral skills. They must also take a test at Cloud County Comm. College on Sept. 12 from 1:00 until 4:00 in Rooms 205 and 206.  RECIPIENTS MUST ATTEND SCHOOL IN Kansas .

 

Judging is based on -- Moral and leadership qualities.

                                -- diligence and personal objectives.

                                  --good verbal and writing skills.

                                School and community involvement.

 

5.  .  Kansas Vocational Education scholarship---DEADLINE---Must apply on or before Oct. 6 for the November 8 test date or by February 6 for the March 7 test date.  AWARD AMOUNT---240 students will win up to $500.  GENERAL INFORMATION---This program provides financial assistance to students who choose to enroll in designated vocational programs at area vo-techs, community colleges, Kansas State University-Salina, several 4-year colleges and proprietary schools.  You will need to register for the test and it will cost $10.  The tests are on November 8 and March 7.  This year the test is given at the NCK Technical College .  You can go to www.kansasregents.org/financial_aid/awards. html to register online.

 

6.  Rural Voices Writing/Photo/video contest---DEADLINE---Must be submitted electronically on or before November 15----AMOUNT---Cash awards of $1,000, $500 and $250.---ELIGIBILITY----Any high school senior who lives in and/or attends a high school in one of 12 counties including Mitchell, Jewell and Cloud county.---General Information--- The North Central Regional Planning commission invites high school seniors to think about the future of rural Kansas and prepare an original work based on the theme “Rural Kansas…My Community”.  Tell them what you think of rural Kansas using either a minimum of 1,000 words, or 10 to 20 photos, or a video of not more than 10 minutes.  More information and the registration form can be obtained at www.eyeonkansas.org, click on “RuralVoices”

 

7.. Toyota Comm. Scholars program---DEADLINE---postmarked  on or before Dec. 1.---ELIGIBILITY---must be a high school senior with at least a 3.0 GPA, be actively involved in a service organization or project that has a positive impact on the school and or the community.  Winners   must attend a 4-yr. College or university. ---GENERAL INFORMATION---We can only select one student to represent us.  If you are interested let me know.  We are looking to nominate a student with an outstanding academic record, who has a well documented record of service both within and outside the school setting, and who is recognized as a leader by his/her peers and instructors.  Please note the distinguishing characteristic will be the overall impact of the student’s contributions.  The student must be actively involved in a service program addressing a school or community need.  Applicants must have their ACT scores sent from ACT.---AMOUNTS---100 AWARDS OF EITHER $10,000 OR $20,000.---SELECTION---based on leadership, academics and involvement.

 

8.  VFW Endowment Scholarship---DEADLINE---must be turned in to me by December 5 (disregard the date on the application).---ELIGIBILITY---Any high school senior or a past graduate of high school who are children or grandchildren of  VFW or its auxiliary members either currently or at the time of their death..---GENERAL INFORMATION---applicants must provide the eligible VFW Post number.---JUDGING---40% grades, 20% need, 20% industry, and 20% extracurricular activities.

 

9 .  SAE Engineering Scholarship---DEADLINE---Applications must be postmarked by December 1.------Eligibility--- All applicants must have high school senior status and intend to earn a engineering degree( some of these may accept math, chemistry, physics, biology, technologies or computer science majors) and be a citizen of the U.S. There are individual minimum ACT test score requirements and they suggest that only students who rank in the 90th percentile in both math and verbal will be successful.---GENERAL INFORMATION---There are many different scholarship opportunities here that you may apply for.  Some of them say that you must attend certain schools and others do not.  There is a $5 processing fee payable to SAE.  Information can be retrieved on the internet at www.sae.org/students/engschlr.htm ---AMOUNTS---Awards generally range from $400 to $10,000.

 

11.  AXA Achievement Scholarship---DEADLINE---Must be completed on or before Dec. 15---AMOUNT---62 Scholarships of up to $15,000----ELIGIBILITY---Applicants must be well rounded, determined to succeed and have demonstrated achievement at a job, sport or extracurricular activity.  These students are the people who set and reach ambitious goals, demonstrate drive, determination and ability to succeed in college and who have respect for self, family and community.  Last years winners include a student who started an organization that provides new and used bicycles at the holidays to kids who have a parent incarcerated.  A student who founded a nonprofit that offers basic computer and internet training, web safety information and increased computer access for underserved youth, families and seniors, a student who coordinated efforts to give visually impaired veterans the opportunity to attend, see and enjoy a major league baseball game with the help of new technology.     If interested in applying go to www.axa-achievement.com

 

12.  Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship---Deadline is to be received by the lodge on or before January 9.---AWARD  500 awards ranging from $4,000 to $60,000.  The top 4 Kansas applications will move on to national competition and will win at least $4,000.  Last year 37 awards of $600 were awarded.--GENERAL INFORMATION is that any high school senior may apply.  The application can be downloaded at www.elks.org/enf/scholars. There is a male and female category, they compete separately.  Financial need, leadership and scholarship are the areas of judgment. (Financial need is 20%, Leadership is 35%, and Scholarship is 45%).  The application will need to be in a specific binder and will include many different documents attached to application.  Two specific letters of recommendations are required, a parent financial statement will be required along with a 500 word or less essay on one of three different topics.”  They prefer it be typed. 

13.  Elks Golf Schol.---Deadline is to be received by the Superior Lodge on or before Jan. 9th.  AWARD---One $500 award across the state.---General Information--- Open to boys or girls who are a member of their high school golf team and who plan to participate in a college golf program. 

 

14.  Elks Past Exalted ruler’s Schol---DEADLINE---Must be received in Superior Lodge on or before Jan. 9th.---AWARD---Six awards of up to $700 (3 boy and 3 girls awards).---JUDGING---Most of the judging is based on financial need.---General Information---Any post secondary education is acceptable for the applicant.  

 

15.  Elks Cross Country Scholarship---Deadline is to be received by the Superior Lodge on or before Jan. 9th.  AWARD---One boy and One Girls in the local area will win an undetermined amount.   Three letters of recommendation will be required.  This looks like a very easy application form to fill out.

16.  Multiple Sclerosis Scholarship---DEADLINE---Must be submitted on or before January 15---AMOUNT---$1,000----GENERAL INFORMATION----This is open to students  who have been diagnosed with MS or who have a parent with MS.  Students may attend a 2 or 4 year college or vocational technical school in the US .---APPLICATION and details can be found at www.nationalmssociety.org/scholarship.

17.  McKelvey Foundation Entrepreneurial Scholarship---DEADLINE---Online Application sent on or before January 25---AWARD---60 scholarships of up to $40,000---General Information----Must be a graduating senior who plans to attend a 4 year college in the US and whom owns and operates a genuine business.  You must have at least one paid employee.  If interested in applying, to www.mckelveyfoundation.org ---JUDGING---Selection has nothing to do with academic achievement or financial need.  Awards are based on demonstration of entrepreneurial spirit.    

18.  KU Hixson Opportunity Award----DEADLINE----Must be received in Lawrence on or before Feb. 1---AWARD AMOUNT----up to $20,000---General Information----This award is designed for students who have faced significant challenges that may hinder their ability to attend college.  There are 10 awards.  ELIGIBILITY----Students must have faced challenges of personal and/or financial hardship, must be admitted to KU, must be high school seniors, students must show financial need from the FAFSA form and students whose parents/guardians did not earn a 4-yr college degree will receive priority.----APPLICATION---application form, a list and brief description of  service and leadership activities, a letter of recommendation stating your personal challenges or financial hardships and a 1 to 2 page essay describing your educational and career goals and the challenges that may hinder you in achieving those goals. 

 

19.  KFC Colonel’s Scholarship---DEADLINE---Online applications will be available from December 1 through February 10.---- AWARD AMOUNT---up to $20,000---GENERAL INFORMATION---Students complete their online applications at www.kfcscholars.org  Students are asked to provide information about themselves and their family life, their activity level during high school and compose a few short answer responses to various questions.  To qualify as an applicant you must be a high school senior with at least a 2.75 GPA.  You must plan to enroll in a public, in state college or university and pursue a bachelor’s degree.

KU Music and Dance Scholarships--- These scholarships are for Band, Orchestra, Jazz Rhythm, Piano, Organ, Voice and Dance.  Audition dates aer for Music:  Nov 21, Jan. 30 and 31, and Feb. 13 and 14.  Dance:  Nov 8 and Feb. 28.  Audition Application forms are available at www.arts.ku.edu/musicdance. Interested students are expected to apply for admission to KU and the school of fine arts by Feb. 1 and Nov. 1 if interested in Academic awards.

New Policy.  Seniors with a 3.25 GPA and a 26 ACT will automatically receive a $1,000 scholarship If your application is in by Nov. 1.

KU Sneak Peak Scholarship Hall Day---this is a chance to check out a scholarship hall and what it might offer to you in contrast to an apartment, sorority, fraternity or residence hall.  Should register by Oct. 29.  The day begins on November 8 at 1:00 and concludes at 5:00.

 

Fort Hays State University ---Wants to remind you that their scholarship deadline is December 15.  You must go online to www.fhsu.edu/finaid to fill out an application. 

 

Colby community college Presidential Scholarship---12 high school seniors will be selected as Colby Presidential Scholarship winners.  To be eligible one must have at least a 21 Act, be an exceptional individual and have  a GPA of at least 3.00  I will need to nominate you for this by Jan. 23, so if you would attend Colby if you would win this please ask me to write for you.  The award if for $1500 per year.

WASHBURN University Garvey SCHOLARSHIP---Must have a 3.25 GPA and have your application, your fee, and your transcript sent to Washburn before November 12.  These Exams are held on November 22 at 9 a.m., December 10 at 6 p.m.---Both in Topeka .  In Hays on Saturday December 6 at 9 a.m.  Please see me if interested.  These are renewable scholarships of $500 to $2,000. 

Kansas State University

I have just received information on fine arts scholarship at KSU.  This includes scholarships in ART, DANCE,  MUSIC, ANDTHEATRE.  If interested please see me. 

 

I received info about KSU women’s rowing team.  I can send your name in if interested in possibly becoming a member of this athletic program.  They are especially interested in women who are at least 5’10” tall and who are involved in high school athletics.

 

MEDICATION AIDE---Classes start on November 4 and end December 16 at Hilltop Lodge.  The cost is $489.50 in advance.  This is being taught through Cloud county Community College and you must be a nurses aid already. 

 

   Career Info:

 

National Security Agency Undergraduate Program---This program requires at least an ACT score of 25.  It will allow you to work for one of the government’s premier intelligence agencies.  It involves one of four programs. of study Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Mathematics and foreign language. If accepted to this program you would attend classes full time, then work full time during the summer at the NSA in areas that are related to your course of study.  You would be required to work for the NSA after graduation for about 5 years.  If interested you must apply on or before Nov. 30.  You would receive a year round salary while attending college, tuition for the college of your choice, books paid for and immediate employment after graduation.  

 

Coming Events:

1.  November 10 are senior days for Pitt State University .  There is a $10 registration fee for students who attend and their guests will pay $5 for the November 10 Saturday. 

2.  Oct. 30--- Wichita State will be here at 8:30 to visit with interested seniors. 

3.  Nov. 3---NCK Tech will take any interested students to an actual recruiter of their electronics program.  They will be attending Garmin International in Olathe , Ks.  They will leave Beloit at 7:00 a.m. and arrive back in Beloit at 6:00 p.m.  If interested contact Kevin Vering at kvering@ncktc.edu

4.  November 3----National Guard  will be here at 9:30 to visit with interested students. 

4.  Nov. 13---NCK Tech will do the same as 4 except they will be visiting Honeywell in Olathe .  They manufacture Avionics equipment.  Will leave Beloit at 7:00 a.m. and arrive in Beloit at 6:00 p.m.
