Dr. Bergen grew up in New Jersey. He came to Kansas when he began studies
at Bethany College. After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture, Dr. Bergen
taught art in Great Bend, then in Salina for 15 years. During this time he earned a Master
of Arts in Education from Kansas State University and an Ed. D. in Art Education from The
University of Kansas. He served as professor of art and then Chair of the Art Department
at Marymount College for eleven years before he turned to sculpture full-time.
Dr. Bergen will hold a permanent and very important place in Kansas
History. It is his sculpture of a Kansas Indian warrior named, Ad
Astra, it is the only sculpture of a Native American warrior that was placed
on the State Capitol dome. It was dedicated on November 4, 2002.
Dr. Bergen's Ad Astra was chosen following a nationwide call for proposals
in 1989 for a sculpture to be placed on the copper-colored dome. The
sculpture is 22 foot tall and cast of bronze.
In addition to winning this very prestigious
honor, Dr. Bergen has won numerous awards and has been recognized by many organizations.
He has been interviewed by NBC evening news anchor Tom Brokaw, and his work has been
featured in newspapers, art journals, and on television.
