Guidelines for the formal Writing Assessment for preschool through sixth grade
as recommended by BICC on May 9, 1996.

1. Students will produce their own writing in school.

2.The writing must be the student's own work. Students may receive ideas and suggestions from peers or the teacher during the assessment, but students must individually and independently organize and transmit the ideas onto paper.

3.The student must have an opportunity to revise. If a teacher allows peer sharing or conferencing in the revising/editing stage of writing, then students may use those strategies during this assessment. The rule is that no one but the student makes additions, deletions or other changes (including spelling and punctuation) on a student's paper.

4.The length of the final piece of writing will be determined by each grade level.

5.The writing will be a personal, nonfictional narrative.

6.Each student's final writing will be judged using the Six-Trait Analytical Scoring Model. (Adapted version used for preschool through second grade.)

7.Scoring of the student's paper will take place on Beloit Relay day. There will be two reading of each paper. If the scores are not within one point of each other, there will be a third read.

Notes From QPA Writing Committee 2001-2002

Our committee will be tracking the use of 6-Trait writing this year. We will analyze the data  of high, middle, and low samples given to our committee from each classroom. the 6-Trait Writing Rubric will be used in the analysis. We will consider the number of traits covered in  addition to how well the traits are exhibited in the samples.
