Guidelines for the Reading Response Journal
(QPA and CRT)

  1. Teachers record the level of each individual student's work using The Reading Response Journal Rubric. ( One suggestion is to  highlight the indicators on the rubric that reflects the journal entry (reader's response) and make your decision based on which level is highlighted the most.)

  2. For QPA records: Teachers will record the number of students that correspond to the Reading Responder Levels, on a copy of the Rubric. ( For example: On a copy of the Reading Response Rubric- You will record X amount of students scored at the Novice level, X amount of students scored at the Emerging level, Maturing Level, and Self-Directed Level. That copy will be handed in to the "QPA Reading Results Collector".

  3. For QPA records: Teachers will also hand in a sample of one high, one middle and one low level responses twice a year. (For example: 3 the first 9 weeks and 3 the third 9 weeks.) The first 3 samples are due at the end of the first 9 weeks and the second are due at the end of the 3rd nine weeks.
For CRT records: Keep a list of the student's individual scores for the last 9 weeks to hand in for the Reading CRT at the end of the year.

  4. Note: All samples do not need to be a response from the same piece of literature and it is not necessary to use the same student for each level.
