Responder |
- The responder
expresses unique personal interactions with the text, which indicate the development of an
individual response style.
- The responder
evidences deep involvement with the text and incorporates powerful writing to share
his/her personal opinions/ emotions/ thoughts.
- The responder
judges and assesses characters against his/her own personal standards, often sharing
advice, criticism, empathy, or disparity.
- The responder
reacts to the text as a literary work and addresses both literary elements and, the
language/ writing techniques used in the text.
- The responder
compares the text to other texts of the same genre, by the same author, or addressing a
similar theme.
- The responder
exhibits other response characteristics in the Maturing Responder category.

| Maturing Responder |
- The responder
expresses& his/her personal interactions with the text, although they are similar to
what others responders may share.
- The responder
shows a willingness to use writing to share personal opinions/ emotions/ thoughts.
- The responder
evidences involvement with the main character by talking to them, giving them advice, or
telling how he/she might behave in the same circumstance.
- The responder
makes sound predictions based on information from the text and validates or refutes those
predictions in later responses.
- The responder
shows a willingness to try new response options suggested by instructor comments or
growing knowledge of response.
- The responder
exhibits other response characteristics from the Emerging Responder category.

| Emerging Responder |
- The responder
attempts to share spontaneously, but he/she might be better suited to a transitional
response prompt format.
- The responder makes
reasonable predictions using information from the text.
- The responder
shares reaction's through writing, but the entries maintain a detached commitment or
connection to the text.
- The responder poses
many questions, either to make sense of the story or to avoid confusion.
- The responder shows
detached insights into the characters, maintaining a distance from deeper character
involvement.
- The responder
exhibits other response characteristics from the Novice Responder category.

| Novice Responder |
- The responder
writes briefly, but seems better able to communicate thoughts and feelings through oral
response.
- The responder
writes a number of brief responses, which merely fulfills an assignment, rather than
sharing a commitment to the text and characters.
- The responder
summarizes, mostly retelling the story, rather than interacting with it.
- The responder
indicates a sense of comprehension, but rarely exhibits or indicates personal involvement
in the text.
- The responder
expresses frustration with the reading/ writing format of the response journal.
